How to add SmartBCH to MetaMask

In this blog, we show you how to add Smart Bitcoin Cash to MetaMask wallet. First, we talk a bit about what the network is and what it does, etc. If you do not want to read about that and directly want to see how to add Smart Bitcoin Cash to MetaMask. You can go down this page and start reading “Getting SmartBCH on MetaMask”.

What is SmartBCH

The new SmartBCH blockchain is a layer  2 network that allows for Ethereum-style smart contracts and tokens. But with the validators and token use of the Bitcoin Cash (BCH) blockchain. The network has adopted the same code set as the Ethereum blockchain but with some minor upgrades making it faster and making the network more linked to the main BCH blockchain.

This gives the network a super cheap transaction price and can process these transactions within 6 seconds. As the block time on the layer is only 26 seconds. Because SmartBCH uses the same code as Ethereum, the network is fully EVM compatible and can also be added to other EVM wallets. This compatibility gives it an edge that we take a better look at later.

For now, the layer 2 seems to be working fine with the support of a fair share of the BCH community. However, some people in the BCH space still wonder why they need the network as Bitcoin Cash already received some upgrades when it comes to token creation on the mainchain. Which made it possible to create SLP (Simple Ledger Protocol) tokens on the Bitcoin Cash blockchain that can be used for a large variety of things.

Can I add Bitcoin Cash to Metamask?

So now that you can use BCH on Metamask via the SmartBCH layer 2. Can you also use Bitcoin Cash with Metamask?

Well no, you can not. The Bitcoin Cash blockchain is a split of the Bitcoin blockchain that just like Bitcoin can not be sent to the Metamask wallet directly. This is because the Metamask wallet works only with EVM compatible blockchains and thus uses similar blockchain addresses and connection points. Because both BCH and BTC do not use an EVM they can not just be added to Metamask as many other chains.

Dapps on SmartBCH

As for now, the SmartBCH Dapp ecosystem is not that big yet. But because of its EVM compatibility, the layer 2 could simply fork the code from other Dapps that run on EVM compatible chains like BSC or Avalanche.

Some project teams have already taken the initiative to copy or build their own Dapp onto SmartBCH with projects like BCHpad, Mistswap, Benswap, and Tropical Finance being some of the first Dapps on the sidechain.

With the current high gas fees on Ethereum and the BCH community looking to become a bigger part of the Web3 ecosystem, we could see more growth in this layer 2 network. Eventually, more and more developer teams could start to build their Dapps on SmartBCH to gain traction with their community and use the low fee structure.

How to pay fees on SmartBCH

The Smart Bitcoin Cash layer 2 sidechain, truly tries to be a layer 2. By not using a new blockchain token to pay for gas fees. But rather keep on using the BCH token. This way the sidechain makes it much easier for BCH holders to move over to the network and receives a lot more support from the people that hold $BCH.

The fees paid for transacting on the network will go to the sidechain’s validators to make it profitable to support the network. You will have to pay fees on SmartBCH in a similar way to most blockchains. Meaning that you will have to pay fees for simple transactions, interacting with smart contracts (Dapps), and creating tokens and NFTs on the network.

This is important for the longevity of the network as no new BCH tokens will be mined by the validators of SmartBCH. Which as a result keeps the tokenomics of BCH healthy and does not dilute the original supply of BCH of more than 21 million coins.

Consensus on SmartBCH

Unlike most EVM chains SmartBCH does not use a full Proof of Stake or Proof of work algorithm. Instead, the validators of the sidechain are chosen via a combination of Proof of Stake and mainchain miner power (POW). For this process, miners can put in the coinbase of the mined block who they want as a validator. The final result of this is decided each epoch which consists of 2,016 blocks or about 2 weeks. Which is then acted upon on the sidechain. 50% of the voting power comes from this mechanism. And the other 50% comes from staking BCH on SmartBCH.

Holders of BCH can bridge their coins over to SmartBCH and then use it there or stake it to vote on one of the validators on layer 2. This way they can not only use it as a governance token but also as a way to earn a yield on their currently BCH holdings.

Briding to SmartBCH

Bridging from Bitcoin Cash to SmartBCH can be done in 2 ways. By either a centralized bridge, usually via a crypto exchange, or via a decentralized bridge. Currently, most users use a centralized bridge-like CoinFlex, Prompt Cash, or Hop Cash. Via these exchanges, you can swap your BCH and other tokens to the sidechain.

For now, this is necessary but not perfect as a decentralized bridge would give more freedom to its users. But in the future, they will be accompanied by the SHA-gate bridge, which should make it easy and cheap to bridge tokens from the main chain to the sidechain.

Other possibilities when it comes to bridging would come from other EVM blockchains. As Tendermint blockchains like SmartBCH can easily bridge with one another. This also goes for the tokens and token standards on these blockchains. So does Smart Bitcoin Cash have its own version of the ERC-20 tokens that are called SEP-20 tokens. This makes it possible to deploy and adopt tokens from other EVM and Tendermint blockchains quite easily.

Wallets that support Smart Bitcoin Cash

Just like with many other EVM-compatible blockchains, they can connect to wallets that allow you to add a manual EVM blockchain. This means that all wallets that support manual EVMs like Hoo Smart Chain, Avalanche, Terra, Polygon can also support Smart Bitcoin Cash.

You can find all these wallets here in our Smart Bitcoin Cash wallet filter. This list has a lot of wallets that also support other EVM wallets. But we can expect that in the future this list will grow with BCH specific wallets. That decided to adopt both BCH and SmartBCH.

Now that you are more educated on the topic, are you ready to start learning “how to add SmartBCH to Metamask wallet”? So you too can use your own SmartBCH wallet. Let’s see how to add SmartBCH to Metamask wallet”.

Getting SmartBCH on MetaMask

So to add the SmartBCH to MetaMask you have to open the MetaMask wallet (In case you don’t have MetaMask yet, please get it on this page).

Once you have MetaMask installed, open it up on the full screen. So you will have the same screen as in our example here.

SmartBCH Metamask 1

Now go to the top right of the screen where it says “Ethereum Mainnet” and click on the little arrow pointing down next to it. This opens the network’s tap where you can select all different types of EVM blockchains (Ethereum virtual machine) networks. Now here you can click on the Custom RPC to add a new custom EVM blockchain network of your choice. In this case, the SmartBCH.

Now Metamask will ask you for the data needed to connect the wallet to the SmartBCH. Please fill in the list below.

Network Name - Smart Bitcoin Cash

RPC URL SmartBCH - https://smartbch.greyh.at

SmartBCH Chain ID - 10000

Symbol - BCH

SmartBCH Block Explorer URL - https://explorer.ont.io

SmartBCH Metamask 3

When you have done this, you can just click save. And now you have added the SmartBCH to your MetaMask wallet.

If you would like to switch between the EVM blockchains. Simply click on the Network button in the top right of the screen to select another blockchain.

Because adding different types of EVM blockchains works the same, you can add any EVM blockchain in the same way. But instead of the list given in this blog, you replace that with another network’s ChainID, symbol, etc.

We hope this blog post helped you to integrate a new EVM into your MetaMask crypto wallet. So that you can now use SmartBCH as much as you want.
