The Bitcoin wallet is the first mobile wallet for Bitcoin created, and is around since 2011. Their focus lies solely on Bitcoin and is already downloaded more than 5 million times from the Google Playstore.

Design

At first sight, I wasn’t a big fan of the design of the Bitcoin wallet, the design looks a bit chunky. Although it doesn’t really draw any feelings of excitement from you. But it does give you an easy feel of calm and clearness throughout the app. Looking at the main page (transaction page) the app does give you a messy look by showing the public key of that transaction. I think this is an unnecessary thing to add to the transaction overview. Because (almost) no one really remembers any public or private keys.

Features

When It comes to extra features (besides sending and receiving crypto) the Bitcoin wallet offers the following.

  • Sweeping of paper wallets
  • When you’re offline, you can still pay via Bluetooth
  • Address book

Improvements

Like every other Wallet out there, The bitcoin wallet has flaws and missing things. The flaws that I point out are of course based on my personal opinion. And I would like to point out that they don’t always have to be a hindrance to anyone.

The Bitcoin wallet does have a lot of nice features and is easy to use so the improvements I see are mainly focused on the design and sidechains. The app could for example try to make use of a less square-based design and a more recognizable collar pattern. Because this is one of the most downloaded bitcoin wallets I would also love to see the integration of Layer 2 solutions to the Bitcoin network like Lightning, Liquid, or Omni supported addresses and conversions to those networks.

Conclusion

The Bitcoin wallet is a good working solid Bitcoin wallet. Although the design may need some work the way the wallet functions and its features do most definitely make up for that. When/if The Bitcoin wallet will implement layer 2 solutions within the app it would make a great mobile wallet. But for now, it is still a very good wallet so it scores a 3 out of 5 stars.

Extra note: So always check the date of this review to see if it is relevant. Wallets can add new functions and change designs to improve their product so a bad review now won’t mean they can’t be great in the future.
